	Filterveils

This piece extends my ongoing exploration of pop culture, identity, and image-making through the medium of face filters. Building on my 2005 project “Popstar Makeovers” in which I transformed gallery and event visitors into their favourite pop icons using face paint, I revisited the concept during the digital age. These augmented reality filters drew inspiration from the makeup of figures such as Britney Spears, Poison Ivy, and Boy George, to name a few.

Originally experienced on Instagram, these filters, no longer hosted, are now presented in a haunting new form: overlaid onto archival film footage, primarily from silent cinema. Actresses from 1910s vampire serials and dancers from lost ballets wear the cyber-glam masks of late 20th-century pop icons. The result is both uncanny and affectionate, a flickering tribute to pop mythologies and forgotten screen presences.

Popstar Makeovers has been performed at events including Whitstable Splashdown, Whitstable Biennale and Vyner Street Festival. The work began with a series of over one hundred hand-drawn images redrawn from photographs of children in face-painting books. I removed the original face paint and replaced it with makeup inspired by pop stars known for their heavily stylised looks. These drawings were then used as the basis for live participatory performances, where members of the public were invited to be made over into their chosen pop star.

The project explores transformation, performance and identity through popular culture, shifting between drawing, face painting and live interaction.

Medium: Paper, pencils and face paint
Alongside the live performances, I created a series of mirror works using drawings developed for the project. The drawings were redrawn from photographs of children in face-painting books. I removed the original face paint and replaced it with makeup inspired by pop stars known for their heavily stylised looks.

For the mirror works, I hand-etched the black outlines onto the reverse of the mirrors before painting the pop star makeup onto the glass using coloured nail varnish. As viewers look into the mirrors, their own reflections appear alongside the transformed faces, extending the ideas of identity and performance explored in the live makeovers.

Medium: Etched mirror, coloured pencil and nail varnish.

	Following In Father's Footsteps,
sung by Miss Vesta Tilley

In 1899 Vesta Tilley laid the foundation stone for the Camberwell Palace of Varieties, which stood at 23–31 Denmark Hill. At the time, Camberwell boasted around half a dozen theatres and cinemas. On the day she laid the foundation stone, she is reported to have said that she would be “delighted to sing the first song in the new Palace of Varieties”.

This film was created for Camberwell Arts Festival 2016 as part of the Metamorphosis project. It features music by music hall star Vesta Tilley, one of the most prominent performers of her era. She began her male impersonation act at the age of five, and her work became strongly associated with transformation, performance and shifting identity.

Vesta Tilley can be seen as an early figure of metamorphosis in performance, an enduring icon whose influence can still be felt today.

Vesta Tilley, quoted in The Era, 8 July 1899.

		<description>
Intertitle TunesIntertitle Tunes is an ongoing project exploring early twentieth-century popular music through drawing, animation and moving image. Using public-domain recordings, I create illustrated lyric videos inspired by silent cinema and early film intertitles.

Each video combines hand-drawn portraits of historic performers, illustrated typography and animated text, bringing archival recordings into a contemporary context. The project grew from my fascination with the distinctive atmosphere of these early recordings and has become an ongoing way of researching and reinterpreting popular culture through drawing and animation.

Several of the videos have also been used for live singalong events, inviting audiences to engage directly with this overlooked musical history.

Falling In Love With Greta Garbo

The moment John Gilbert falls in love with Greta Garbo on screen in Flesh and the Devil. Gilbert was one of the biggest silent film stars of the time, while Garbo’s fame went on to eclipse his.

It was said that when sound films arrived, Gilbert’s career declined because his voice did not match the romantic image audiences had of him. Others claimed the studio boss Louis B. Mayer disliked him and helped push his career into decline.

I am drawn to this moment between Gilbert and Garbo, particularly the instant they first see each other on screen. I have wanted to make an animation of his reaction to Garbo for some time, focusing on that suspended moment of recognition and desire.

The animation is a looped reaction shot of a man falling in love.

This is a 360 video. For full interaction, view directly on YouTube where you can click and drag to look around.
The Pods is a work made for Hell or High Water, a group exhibition responding to the historic lightship LV21 on the River Thames in Gravesend. Originally conceived as a weekend of live art exploring life’s transitions, adversity and transformation, the project was adapted into a digital format due to Covid-19 restrictions.

My initial proposal for Hell or High Water was to develop my work along the theme of isolation, which became much more relevant during the Covid-19 lockdown. I love the space inside the Light Vessel 21 ship, particularly the area beneath deck, which to me resembles the images of spacecraft from science fiction in TV and film. Ships are so closely tied to how we view space travel through the lens of sci-fi; we picture spacecraft slowly gliding through space like boats.

For Hell or High Water I used the lower deck as a space to explore and extend my work inspired by sci-fi themes, isolation and the alien figure. I was thinking about how the air receiver tanks resemble the isolation helmet designed by sci-fi pioneer Hugo Gernsback, editor of Science and Invention magazine, an idea I had previously explored in Isolation Helmet.

The work takes the form of a 360 video constructed from my own drawings of The Pods. Within this environment, the Facefilter is positioned as if it is looking out from within the openings of the structure, animating the idea of enclosed bodies and contained viewpoints. Originally released on Instagram and Facebook, the filter is now no longer supported on those platforms and remains as part of the documented work.Alongside the 360 video, I developed a series of soft sculptural tentacled hands made from fleece fabric, with elongated fingers and suction details. These were hand-sewn and designed to extend the creatures seen within The Pods, emerging from the openings of the structure.

The version shown in the accompanying video is an early test piece in pink fleece. The final sculptural hands used in the installation were white and had longer, more exaggerated fingers. These were installed within the physical exhibition space of LV21, appearing to extend from the pods within the ship.

As the exhibition took place during Covid-19 restrictions, the work was only experienced in person by a limited audience. The installation is now documented through exhibition footage.
