Silent Stars I
A series of eight paintings depicting silent film actors whose careers declined with the arrival of sound cinema. Made for the exhibition Remember My Name, the works were inspired by performers whose fame was once immense but who have since become largely forgotten.
I was interested in the changing nature of celebrity and in the struggle some actors faced as cinema entered a new technological era. Their stories became a way of thinking about how public figures, no matter how celebrated, can gradually disappear from popular memory.
Medium: Canvas board, acrylic paint
Size: Set of 8 paintings, each 7 × 5 inches
Shown in:
Remember My Name Sartorial Contemporary Art, London (UK)
