This hand-drawn felt tip animation redraws the underwater sequences from the final music video made by Aaliyah before her death in 2001. While the original video is largely set on a beach and aboard a boat, it was the brief underwater scenes that stayed with me. Isolated and translated into drawing, these moments become slowed down and contemplative, focusing attention on their dreamlike quality.
The work continues my interest in reinterpreting popular culture through drawing, using animation to revisit and transform familiar moving images.
