Mess Wit Da Princess Nd Get Laid Out / Stay Fly

This pair of etched mirror works explores constructed identity, teenage self-fashioning and the visual language of early social media. The phrases etched into the backs of the mirrors were collected from MySpace profiles, where stylised declarations of confidence, aggression and glamour were often presented through decorative, hyper-feminine graphics. The works play on the tension between these tough, performative statements and their playful aesthetic.
Each mirror is painted with nail varnish, drawing on the language of cosmetics and self-decoration. One features a chandelier-like arrangement of jewellery sourced from Argos catalogues, alongside articulated clowns and ragdolls, recurring motifs in my work that speak to childhood aspiration, performance and the ways identity is assembled through consumer culture.
The second mirror combines the etched text with pigeons, a dandelion and a hybrid castle that merges fairytale architecture with tower blocks and satellite dishes. These recurring images reflect my ongoing interest in overlooked urban subjects, imagined places of protection and escape, and the meeting point of childhood fantasy and everyday experience.
By layering reflective surfaces, found online language and familiar cultural imagery, the works examine how identity is performed, projected and continually constructed through aspiration, popular culture and shared visual codes.
