Isolation Helmet
Isolation Helmet is a sensory deprivation wearable created for Chutney Spa. The work takes the form of a sculptural helmet inspired by the Isolator, designed in 1925 by Hugo Gernsback, editor of Science and Invention magazine and a key figure in early science fiction.
The original Isolator was developed as a device to block out distraction and external noise. It has since been discussed in relation to ideas of attention, focus and sensory control. I became interested in the helmet as both a speculative technology and a psychological tool, particularly its relationship to isolation and perception.
My version, developed as part of Chutney Spa, reimagines the Isolator as a wearable spa treatment. The subject enters a state of sensory withdrawal while wearing the helmet, raising questions about transformation and altered experience.
The helmet contains a Google Glass device linked to a series of 360 YouTube videos created for the work. These videos place the viewer inside enclosed, box-like environments, extending the sensation of isolation into a virtual space.
