Description:

Created for the exhibition 42, this portrait-format animation consists of 42 hand-drawn images of Neneh Cherry dancing in a continuous loop, reflecting both the exhibition title and the singer's age at the time. Displayed on a television turned onto its side, the animation pairs the repeated dance sequence with an old scratchy piano recording, bringing together contemporary popular culture and early recorded sound.

By translating moving image into drawing, the work reduces the dance to a repeated sequence of gestures and movements. This interest in looping performance, repetition and popular culture has continued throughout my practice, reappearing in later animations and moving-image works that explore performance, imitation and constructed identity.
