This series of paintings uses text collected from the Celebrated Sobriquets MySpace pages, where I archived and reworked the exaggerated language of teenage online profiles and comments.

I was particularly interested in repeated phrases about “loving your haters”, where confidence, bravado and identity are performed through stylised, often contradictory statements. These fragments of text are taken from a wider culture of usernames, comments and profile writing that circulated on early social networking sites.

The works translate this language into painted form using acrylic, nail varnish and glitter, giving permanence to what were originally fleeting, performative online statements.
