Dancehall Danceoff

Dancehall Danceoff is an animation based on early YouTube videos of girls practising and performing dancehall moves. Each frame is painted in watercolour.

I was interested in the way these early YouTube videos captured performance outside professional settings, with people using the camera to practise, imitate and share dance. The work responds to a moment when online video was becoming a new space for performance and self-expression.

The animation continues my interest in drawing from popular culture and translating moving images into hand-made animation.
